John is a young man who has not yet lived up to his full potential. Give him time. He'll get there eventually. At the moment, he's on leave from the British Army which is currently engaged in a rather serious entanglement known as the Great War. He's also currently under the tutelage of one Professor Stellan Siggurdson, studying ancient languages for the most part, with a smattering of mythology, etymology, history, and prehistory cultures, though John is not entirely sure why the professor decided to take him on.

As for his background, John comes from a middle-class English family, but his father died when he was three and his mother passed away when he was twelve, leaving himself and his younger brother in the care of a Catholic priest. John's faith is extremely important to him, and it shapes everything he believes about the world around him.

He's also terribly fond of faery stories or anything similar to them. Myths, fables, legends, epics. Anything old and mysterious and shrouded in the mists of time, especially if it touches on the supernatural.

And he's about to embark on the strangest adventure of his life, but he doesn't know that yet.

John is actually a very young J.R.R. Tolkien, only this information is not given out until the very end of Here, There Be Dragons, the first book in the Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica. As such, he may recognize some characters in the bar as remarkably similar to ideas he has in his head, but at this point he has not published anything more than one poem about Earendil.
